In 1990, China House of Arts mounted an exhibition featuring Xue Jian Xin's paintings of Suzhou, the "Venice of China." The accompanying catalogue describes these works aptly - the viewer is "transported to the site itself, aware of the diffused lighting of the day, of the small fronds growing out of a canal bank, of the way the water catches the images around it." Amazingly, while retaining a wonderful painterly quality, his impressionistic technique also exudes an almost photographic quality.
