Admiral Togo Heihachiro (1848-1934) was instrumental in making the Japanese Imperial Navy a force to be reckoned with on the world stage. He spent 1871-1878 in England as a young naval cadet, being aboard the aging HMS Exmouth in 1877. His English peers nicknamed him "Johnny Chinaman."
