After training with Sir Peter Lely, John Greenhill established his own studio and painted portraits of many renowned 17th-century figures, including John Locke, the First Earl of Shaftesbury, and James II as Duke of York (later King James II of England).
Inigo Jones was one of the first architects to implement Renaissance ideals in England, and he revolutionized stage design for theatrical performances. This portrait is a quintessential representation of Jones, who wears here his skull cap, brown coat, and large white collar, and looks thoughtfully into the distance.
