Partially printed document on a War Department form, Richmond, July 26, 1864, one page, octavo (10 x 8 in.), naming W(illiam). H. Stewart a Lt. Colonel of the 61st Virginia Infantry.

Stewart enlisted as a Captain in Norfolk on July 11, 1861. Though wounded three times during the course of the war, he survived to enjoy a long and varied professional career that lasted into the 20th century.
