A largely self-taught artist, Backus excelled at depicting the backwoods and waters of his beloved Florida. While his earlier works are in a more impressionist style, his later paintings, like the one offered here, are highly detailed and realistic, reflecting his scientific study of the flora and fauna of Florida.
