Paul Sarazen, an editor at The New York Post in the 1930s, later worked for Liberty: A Weekly for Everybody. He commissioned this painting for one of the covers.

Born in London, Leake moved to the United States in the early 20th century and established himself as an advertising artist and illustrator.
