Born in Rotterdam, Rackwitsz lived on both the east and west coasts of the United States before returning to the Netherlands. He was Co-founder and Director of painting at the Hollywood Institute of Art in the mid-1920s.

The lining is detached from the original canvas which is now slack; minor stable craquelure.
