In 1916, at the age of forty-three, Edward Bruce left a successful career as a lawyer and entrepreneur to pursue art full-time. By 1932 he was forced to join the business world again in order to make a living. However, by late 1933, Bruce was appointed by the Treasury Department as administrator of the first federally supported arts program, the Public Works of Art Project.
