Titled GEN. MARION IN HIS SWAMP ENCAMPMENT INVITING A BRITISH OFFICER TO DINNER, after a painting by John White of Charleston, South Carolina, engraved by John Sartain (New York: The Apollo Association, 1841), unframed.
21.5 x 26 5/8 in.
During the Civil War this scene came to symbolize Southern endurance in the face of adversity and, as such, it served as a source of inspiration during dark times. The Confederate Treasury, recognizing this, placed the image on some of its early war $10 bills. A very rare print today.
The sheet is laid to a board backing; overall browning; some damp stains. Nonetheless, will be attractive when framed and hung.
$400 - 800
