Federal Era Surveyor's Compass by Thomas Whitney

Early 19th century, the 6 in. steel dial engraved "Thos Whitney maker Philadelphia," the outer ring is divided into four 90-degree quadrants, the steel directional needle sits on a central brass post, the mount has one level as made and removable sights at either end, complete with dial cover and socket rest for the mount. Presented in a wooden box carrying two labels for Philadelphia instrument maker Charels E. Helffricht.

William Clark, of Lewis and Clark fame, carried a Thomas Whitney pocket compass on his celebrated transcontinental expedition. Clark's instrument is held by the Smithsonian Institution, which also has a surveyor's compass nearly identical to the present example.

In working order at present, complete with functioning level; spotting to dial; brass surfaces cleaned and polished.
