THE WRITINGS OF JOHN MUIR, Vol. I, THE STORY OF MY BOYHOOD AND YOUTH and A THOUSAND MILE WALK TO THE GULF (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1916), 428pp., octavo, 3/4 leather and gilt over red linen boards. Tipped onto a front endpaper is a partial leaf from Muir's working manuscript for page 108 of THE MOUNTAINS OF CALIFORNIA (1894), the text here reading: "...the northern specimens may be found here & there considerably below this limit, in basins specially protected from inwashing detritus, or exceptional in size. These however are not sufficiently numerous to make any marked irregularity..."

Examples of John Muir's handwriting are quite scarce.
