Model 1842, .69 caliber, 42 in. smoothbore barrel, 57.5 in. overall length, secured by three bands to a walnut stock, all iron mounts, the lockplate is marked with US over an eagle and SPRING/FIELD/1846, no inspector stamp on the stock, the surface of the butt's right hand side is carved H W Casey (?) by a former owner, the butt's left side carries additional unrelated carvings.
The first percussion long arm contracted by the U. S. Government.
Powder corrosion at breech; wear and nicks consistent with field use; old patina to metal elements; ramrod likely a replacement.
