British, early 19th century, oils and gilt on copper, a fouled anchor within a laurel wreath is surmounted by a crown and over a streamer reading "Recruit," mounted in a gilt oval frame of stamped copper, a much later chipboard back is labeled "H. H. Brig 'Recruit' / capture of D' Haupoult / Commander Chas. Napier / 1809." The 18-gun "Recruit" was laid down in 1806. She saw vigorous duty during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812.
