Likely plates from William H. Brown's HISTORY OF THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMERICA (Philadelphia: Barclay & Co., 1877), to include: "The 'West Point,' the Second Locomotive built in the United States for actual service on a Railroad." Representing the the South Carolina Railroad, this engine made its debut on March 5, 1831. Black musicians serenade the white passengers inhabiting the rearmost car, 9 x 18.5 in., framed to 16 x 26.25 in., plus; "THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVE AND TRAIN OF PASSENGER-CARS IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK / The American Locomotive 'De Witt Clinton,' Mr. David Matthew, Engineer." The train's first run - from Albany to Schenectady on August 9, 1831 - is depicted here, 9 x 21.5 in., framed to 16 x 29.5 in.
