This charming etching depicts two moderately dressed competing flower saleswomen caught in an awkward street encounter. Pencil signed "Rivals" to the lower left and "Elizabeth O'Neill Verner, 35/100" to the lower right. The etching is on off-white paper with the "Vidalon" watermark, in overall good condition. "A leader in establishing Charleston, South Carolina as a dynamic cultural center, Elizabeth Verner (1883-1979) depicted the historic city's seemingly endless supply of subject matter including lush landscape, architectural landmarks, and local people." -Martha Severns, American Art Review.
