Oil on canvas, 19th century, housed in its likely original gilt and gesso frame. A modern inscription on the stretcher reads "Sarah Nichols Ely / Born 1811 Fairfield, CT./ Married William Watson Ely 1834 / Died 1878 / Painted Ca. 1850 by Gilbert."
