Dodge Sterling Pinehurst Presentation Bowl

By William Waldo Dodge, Jr., circa 1931, circular bowl raised on conforming applied foot, allover attractive Arts & Crafts style hammered surface, with applied Pinehurst medallion, hand-engraved presentation reading "Seventh Annual Mid January Tournament Best Qualification Score Pinehurst N.C. January 16, 1931 Won by," fully marked on the base. The Dodge Silver Shop was founded in 1924 in Asheville, N.C.; in 1928 it moved to Biltmore Forest where Dodge was assisted by several silversmiths. He published a brochure in 1936 titled "William Waldo Dodge, Jr.: Maker of Hand Wrought Silver" in which, through photographs and diagrams, he explains the differences between various types of bowls and plates. He also explains the basics of his technique and pricing. Dodge was trained as an architect before he went to Europe for World War I. After the war he came to the Oteen Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville, N.C. for treatment. There he was taught metalwork as part of his rehabilitation.
