Robert Vonnoh (NY/CT, 1858-1933), "At the Helm"

Oil on canvas (relined), signed at lower left "Vonnoh," housed in a modern, period appropriate, gilt wood frame. Vonnoh was one of America's first impressionists. In addition to his ephemeral landscapes, he also was a noted portraitist. This painting incorporates the cool colors of a rough sea behind a decidedly solid sea captain.
