Early 1970s, depicts an elderly lady leaning casually against a column; this two-toned work renders her natural features in unglazed terracotta while her clothing and jewelry are colored with a glossy light gray slip. The work's Dutch-born sculptor has had a studio in Big Sur, California since 1958 and is world renowned for his modernist bronzes of American and African wild animals. In 1973, Vanderveen digressed from his usual fare and held a special exhibition of human figurals at Hirschl & Adler Galleries in New York City. The lady depicted here was possibly among the thirty works shown. Included with the sculpture is an exhibition booklet produced by the gallery for Vanderveen. A very rare form for this artist.
