The first president and founder of the American Fine Arts Society, Howard Russell Butler was elected t the National Academy of Design in 1902. He is particularly known for his mystical desert landscapes, a theme he turned to again and again after a trip west to California following his Princeton graduation.

Lined and on new stretchers; varnished; black light inspection reveals one small minor touch-up to sky.
