Colt Special Model 1861 Contract Rifle-Musket

.58 caliber, 40 in. barrel dated 1864 with VP and eagle's head marks, inspector mark MNM and STEEL on the left at the breech, the lockplate stamped U.S./ COLT'S PT F.A. MFG CO / HARTFORD CT and dated 1864 behind the hammer, eagle motif on bolster, retains tulip head ramrod and U S marked bayonet, bright finish to all metallic elements, walnut stock stamped with WMV and JT inspectors' cartouches.
