The brass backstrap professionally engraved "Lieut. W. H. Alexander 139th Regt. N.Y.V.," the weapon with matching serial # 98439 throughout; .36 caliber with 7.5 in. octagonal barrel having Hartford address line, six-shot plain cylinder marked with the serial number and COLT'S PATENT; walnut grips.
Private Collection of a Gentleman from North Carolina
William H. Alexander enlisted in Brooklyn on May 1, 1861 as a private in Co. A, 67th New York Volunteers. On September 9, 1862 he was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant and transferred to Co. E, 139th New York Infantry. He served in this regiment until killed at Fair Oaks on October 29, 1864 during the Richmond-Petersburg campaign.
Working action; the frame retains 50% case colors; dings to grips from use; light gray surfaces; overall good condition.
