Early 20th century, possibly zinc or similar alloy; five-part form, a stylized flame finial surmounts a shaped dome which supports six scrolled dragon headed arms each enhanced by a pendant bell, over a pierced globe with hinged door designed to provide illumination, set upon a pedestal with entwined dragon, the whole raised on a hexagonal plinth with relief Foo Lions.
87 x 40 in.
Originally purchased by DeWitt Harmon of Kernersville during a 1928 trip to the Orient, after which the lanterns became a focal point of his gardens. The lanterns were later purchased at auction by the consignor's family in 1950.
Featuring the mon of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Excellent surface weathering and verdigris. Two arms broken; later electrification.
