Born in Philadelphia, Bensell studied with John Lambdin and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A respected painter and illustrator, Bensell later taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was a founding member and the first president of the Philadelphia Sketch Club.
