Oil on canvas, signed at lower left, framed.
DOA 38 x 22.5 in.
By descent to the artist's granddaughter, who provided the following information:
During WWII, my grandfather courageously protected his wife and two teenage children from the German Army & Gestapo. The family remained on the run throughout France & Belgium, staying only one or two days in advance of the German forces. They eventually went into hiding in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium while remaining active with the Underground Resistance. What is noteworthy, is that the family was forced from their home in Brussels leaving all their worldly possessions behind. To demonstrate their passion for the arts, what they chose to bring with them was my grandfather's paintings, easel and art supplies, as well as the two children's violins.
