The first three to home from Captain John A. Judson, a U. S. Regular serving in the Assistant Adjutant General's Office, each on official stationery variously datelined "Newbern" or New Berne, dated February 2 and 7, April 20 1864. He states, "
...They may trouble us again, but we are ready for them. You must not feel alarmed at home, for New Berne is a second Sevastopol..."; the fourth letter, dated April 6, 1862, is penned by an unidentified soldier signing off as "
Morton" and gives a full account how Burnside's army is organized in the region.
