Born in New Jersey, circa 1766, Woods was working as a silversmith in New York City from 1791 until 1794. He first advertised as a silversmith in New Bern, NC on December 27, 1794. In the Newbern Herald, November 27, 1809, he advertised Silver spoons particularly of every description, he warrants lower than they can be bought anywhere to the northward - and of superior workmanship. Woods passed away in 1834.

Several spoons and holloware items by Woods are in the collection of the North Carolina Museum of History. A pair of teaspoons with similar engraving are illustrated in Silversmiths of North Carolina by George Barton Cutten.
