By descent through the family of Joseph Harrison, Jr. (PA, 1810-1874)
Mr. Harrison contracted with the Russian government in 1843 to provide and manage all equipment for the recently installed railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. For his successful and satisfactory
completion of these various
undertakings Mr. Harrison was decorated
by Nicholas I with the Order
of St. Ann and gifted with numerous
other tokens of the friendship
and esteem of the Tsar.
Upon his return to Philadelphia in the 1852, Harrison resided in his grand mansion on Rittenhouse Square modeled after the Pavlovsk Palace in St. Petersburg. He was also an avid art collector and advocator for public art and museums.
