The Model T ranks at number eight of all-time automobile sales. Produced from 1908-1927, its production numbers were 16.5 million. 1920 saw 1.4 million units produced, of which approximately 95,000 were produced in the Runabout Body. The Runabout Body could accommodate the "Turtleback" storage area, or a small open truck bed could be used in place. All Model T cars were produced with a 177 cubic-inch 4 cylinder engine, that produced 22 horsepower. A three speed transmission was standard, with one speed as reverse. Sales of Ford's Model T were so successful, that from 1917-1923 no advertising was purchased. It had become the standard.
This car includes the original invoice dated October 1, 1920 from Elliott Motor Company in Suffolk VA. It shows a base price of $520.00. By 1920 standards, it was loaded with options. The vehicle was equipped with a wooden steering wheel, different rear wheels, and Hassler shock absorbers. Total price, with gas and oil, was $571.05. It has a clear NC Title.
The current owner purchased the vehicle in 2004, with the intent of using it in a wedding. At that time, the car was running and operated correctly. The car has remained in a climate controlled garage for the last 14 years, with no preparations made for that length of storage. However, the simple, durable and reliable design of these Fords, would suggest that cleaning up the fuel system, and replacing the battery, may be all this car needs. A turn of the hand crank produces compression and the car moves.
