Zatzka often painted keyhole scenes, private views of women housed in keyhole-shaped matting and framing to mimic a voyeur's vantage point. Though this painting lacks its original keyhole matting and framing, it is an excellent example of the type of scene Zatzka painted to facilitate the erotic male gaze.
