An artist from a young age while growing up in Scotland, McIntyre trained as a dentist. At the age of 40 he retired from his practice to paint full time. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and was profoundly influenced by the Scottish Colourists. His painterly technique was well-suited to capturing the coastal views he favored in Wales and Scotland.
