Neiznestny immigrated to the United States in 1975 when he tired of pushing against the oppressive socialist realism favored by the Soviet state. He first ignited the ire of Nikita Khrushchev at an exhibition of his paintings in 1962. Despite that inauspicious introduction, the artist and the leader forged a respectful friendship. Krushchev's family commissioned the artist to design the Soviet leader's tomb.
Neizvestny exhibited frequently throughout his lifetime. He created many public monuments including ones at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
