Artist Stan Dann began his career with an advertising firm in San Francisco in the 1960s, where his painted bas-relief signage immediately turned heads. When Dann shifted his focus to fine art in the 1980s, his mixed-media sculptures - such as this work from 1988 - also found success and are now present in major collections such as the Crocker Art Museum, San Francisco, CA and The Hechinger Collection, Washington, DC. Visually, Dann's skillful manipulation of material makes viewers question medium and space, as his polychromed wood often suggests ceramic and the subtle three-dimensionality entices a closer look.
