Southern Federal Inlaid Mahogany Sideboard

Attributed to Eastern North Carolina, circa 1800, mahogany veneers, yellow pine and poplar secondary, rectangular case with bow front stepped central section, central upper long drawer above two hinged cabinet doors, flanked by two small upper drawers, above two deep drawers, all feature lightwood inlay border and double line inlay shaped panels, case supported by six legs, each with an inlaid stile, square tapered legs with an upper and lower cuff.

From the estate of the late Dr. and Mrs. William Preston Few (Mary Reamey Thomas Few), Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Few was Duke University’s first president, serving first as president of Duke’s predecessor, Trinity College from 1910-1924, then as president of Duke from 1924 until his death in 1940. This sideboard resided in the president’s house on campus at his death in 1940. By family descent to current consignor.

A good example of a Southern sideboard featuring a deep case and original backboards with through mortise and tenon construction.

Top reset with later braces to underside; shrinkage crack length of board with some fill; drawer runners rebuilt; left and right deep drawers with replaced bottom boards; right rear leg original but with break and repair; a few veneer patches and a couple minor veneer chips.
