Born in Charlotte, Stacks studied with William Lester Stevens and William J. Potter. He later lived in Blowing Rock, NC and Hilton Head, SC.

A label on the verso of this painting reads:
"Early morning light, done from one of the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway - evidenced by the misty foreground. While this is an idea, it is a finished picture in itself."
