Julian Rix was born in Vermont, but achieved success as an artist on both coasts. He lived for a time in San Francisco, maintaining a studio in Monterey, and remained active in the city's art scene even after moving to New York City in 1880. Rix is associated with both the Barbizon style and the Tonalists. His paintings are in numerous collections including the de Young Museum, the Institute of Chicago, and the Brooklyn Museum.
