The base with mark reading "H. Mahler / N.C." and period engraving "Poe," parcel gilt, the body with period monogram "EJP," exquisitely hand-engraved with a coral motif to the body, the collar with star, flower, and axe stamps against a swirl of eddies ground, the applied strap handle with shell form terminus to handle and applied acanthus leaf to thumbrest.

The decorative elements on the collar of this pitcher relate to a beaker and ladle in the collection of the North Carolina Museum of History. Another ladle with similar decoration and the monogram "JPW" was sold at Freeman's Auction in Philadelphia (lot 210, November 16, 2016).

Good estate condition.
