Christ Before Pilate is one of the largest of Rembrandt's etchings. It is impressive in its complexity, level of detail, and the successful depiction of emotion, particularly Pilate's inner struggle as he decides the fate of Christ.

Rembrandt incorporated a self portrait within this monumental scene. He is pictured to the left of Christ, wearing a plumed hat and looking directly out of the scene and into the eyes of the viewer.

An excellent, richly-inked impression of this rare, early etching. Ink sits high on the surface of the sheet. Printing shows incredible detail with strong contrasts. Rich burr is present on the curtain at the right.

Overall excellent condition. Sheet has approximately 1mm margin below lower platemark, and trimmed down to but not within platemark elsewhere. Image and sheet in overall bright, clean condition. Edges with few minor nicks, some repairs, and some yellowing. Some age-expected soft sheet bends and light stains visible to verso.
