Mid-19th century, hand-carved natural and brown stained Asian ivory chessmen depicting royal and divine figures; the emperor and empress effigies with mother-of-pearl inlays of Chinese characters on the bases; the set includes a 20th century fitted wooden storage box that opens to become a chessboard.
