Complete with 32 pieces, the opposing sides designated by having either brown or yellow bases, the board's underside carries a typewritten label reading, "This chess set was presented to my mother Virginia Osborne Mendenhall in 1930 by the directors of Guilford College. It was made at the pottery there (to) which she contributed funds for its establishment."
