William Steene painted portraits of many well-known North Carolinians. He and his wife seasoned in both Tryon and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 1930, he was commissioned to paint a large history painting titled The Baptism of Virginia Dare for the Legislative Building in Raleigh.
