Maud Gatewood was born and raised in rural Yanceyville, North Carolina. She received her BFA at North Carolina Woman's College (now UNC-Greensboro) and her MFA in Painting from Ohio State. In 1963 she was awarded a Fulbright grant to study under Oskar Kokoschka in Austria.
