George Loring Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts. After an apprenticeship and short career as a wood engraver, he left for Europe to learn to paint. He earned the nickname "Claude Brown" due to his penchant for copying the 17th century landscapes of Claude Lorraine. He returned to Boston in 1834, but continued traveling abroad to Italy, Germany and France for the rest of his life. His European landscapes are among the most romantic and accomplished of his paintings.
