The coin was minted by hand in Mexico City, 1650s, the obverse with Spain's arms, its reverse with a cross incorporating castles and lions representing Castile and Leon.

This coin, a classic "Piece of Eight," has the dark coloring and slightly rough surfaces associated with sea-salvaged treasure. The source wreck is unknown.
