1920s or earlier, likely Navajo, both of carved and painted wood, the first with a white face, circular ears and a caped robe (7.5 in.) (losses to ears and feet; paint with some stains and wear); the second a classic form with cylindrical nose, extended ears (8 in.) (one ear missing; losses to feet) (overall paint wear).

From the collection of Mrs. Harriet Nottingham, an Ohio missionary serving the Navajos of Shiprock, New Mexico in the 1920s. Tribal members presented her with the artifacts here as a farewell gesture of thanks and goodwill upon her departure from the reservation.
