From the Collection of the late Cary Lee Guy, MD, New York
By descent to the late Virginia "Ginger" Pleasant, Angier, North Carolina

This full length self-portrait of the artist is an exceptional testament to the artist's skill. The presentation of the figure recalls an actor on a stage or an attendant at an elaborate fancy dress ball. The portrait is an interesting amalgam of the Dutch Golden Age style, with a decidedly "modern" look and scale favored by contemporary painters such as James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, William Merritt Chase and Alfred Stevens.

Stabilized crack to panel; evidence of cleaning and some minor scattered re-touch visible under UV light; minor rubbing to gilt frame.
