Manjit Bawa is a highly regarded modern Indian artist known for his colorful figurative paintings. He was born in Dhuri, Punjab, and began his artistic studies at Delhi Polytechnic in 1958 under the tutelage of Somnath Hore, Dhanraj Bhagat and B. C. Sanyal. He moved to London in 1964 where he worked as a silkscreen printer and studied painting. Bawa returned to India in the early 1970s and began teaching at Delhi's College of Art.
Manjit Bawa broke from the prevailing trend in modern Indian art towards abstract and non-figurative painting. His paintings utilize rich colors and sensuous rounded lines to explore Indian themes of love, mythology and mysticism.
Two small light brush strokes of paint to red ground at lower center of image; small dark raised spot to woman's scarf; else in good estate condition.
