Both carved and painted wood with glass eyes, the larger bird, retaining weight and leather loop, is inscribed "
OLD fan tail" and signed "
Bill Finkell, a sticker on the keel reads "
Budgeon sempere Pearl Beach Mich (allover wear to paint; two long cracks running from front to back; drill hole on tail) (17 in. long); the second bird is stamped "CLJ" on the underside and has drill holes and an outline associated with the former presence of a weighted keel; the decoy retains an inventory sticker from M. Finkel & Daughter, a prestigious Philadelphia art and antique gallery (14.75 in.) (appears to have some black overpaint around the head).
