Carolina Boat Company Skiff
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Believed to be a Carolina Boat Company skiff built by the Britt family in Lumberton, North Carolina and titled as a 1989. Lonnie, and son Robert built boats from 1940-2004. A very popular boat for shrimping with nets, and fishing in the tidal creeks was the recessed well net boats with tiller steering. Early boats were made of Cypress and were heavy. In 1948, they switched to Marine Plywood. Hull presumably made from Marine grade plywood (typically tropical okoume wood, which will not soak up water, and is considered the finest wood for marine plywood). Recorded conversations say that boats built earlier than 1990 or so, still used mahogany for the frame, trim and rockers. This boat features Mahogany top rails, later boats used Red Oak. All of the original and later Mahogany are painted with a clear poly coating that was baked, with the grain exposed. All other original surfaces are painted with a traditional Green/White paint scheme presumably in enamel.

This boat is in remarkable condition with many new features. The total length of the boat is 15'4". A simulated Teak /Holly raised floor was added. The bow of the boat has a later storage compartment made of Mahogany with a top deck, with bow light and cleat added. The hinged doors are secure, and open to reveal storage for gear, wine, and more. Two hinged seats, that can be folded away, make for an open deck. The included top ribs provide support for an included dry cover for the entire boat. The last owner had Sunbrella material that stretched over the front ribs, and provided shelter for possible overnight trips and/or shade. The buttons on the underside of the rub rails were used to secure the top. A panel was added to the port side to include a fish finder, fused switches for the fore and aft lights, the bilge and the auxiliary 12v power supply. A flagpole, port and starboard rope guides, and rod holders have been added to the transom. A 1989 model Johnson 30 horsepower two-stroke outboard motor with electric start and tiller controls is mounted to the the inset transom. This is why it has a 1989 model year for title and registration. The battery has tested good, and two 2.5 gallon fuel tanks are included, both fitting in the port side well. The battery is unsecured in the starboard well.

Private Consignment from Burlington, North Carolina. Purchased locally in Burlington from an elderly man, and partially restored. The boat does not have a hull number, but does have a valid NC boat registration. Paperwork to accompany the lost title is confirmed, and the trailer is sold without title. No VIN is apparent on trailer.

Stored for the last 15 years covered, dry, and under shelter; recently filled with water and only showed a small leak on starboard side; these boats needed to be in the water at all times to maintain the watertight nature, as wood swells when wet; known history of boat through last two owners from mid 90's; this boat is ready for Sunday cruises.

Transom shows some cracking to paint, and inside of wells show the same; the wood is solid with the surface of some bottom ribs in the well being softer than surrounding areas; some waterproofing material has been added; motor was serviced recently, and has no apparent concerns; bottom is solid and doesn't show any concerning scars.
