James Henry Beard was born in Buffalo, New York, the son of a sailor and farmer. His family moved to Ohio when Beard was eleven. While still a teenager, Beard received some instruction from Jarvas Frary Hanks, an itinerant artist. Beard followed in Hanks footsteps and spent several years traveling and painting in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Louisville. He settled in Cincinnati in 1834 and remained in the city until leaving for New York in 1870. He exhibited widely during his lifetime and was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1872.
